Yep! Seems like they fixed it.. Since BP 1.7 these issues have more chance to be fixed, because now BP plugins need to work with ALL themes.

It goes a bit beyond regular support to describe all the steps needed to get this working, but I would do something like this:

Copy over the homepage template to your Balance child theme
Register the new […]

Copy over sidebar.php from your parent theme to your child theme.
Open up the file you just copied (located in your child theme)
and erase all the contents of the file. Save

Now open up style.css […]
