After going through 10+ major iterations, I finally had mockup that resembled a design for the jmonkeyengine.org front page that I would be really happy with.
Here’s what I’ve got:
I’ve nick-named it “Portal” because that’s it’s main purpose; to act as a brief yet informative stepping-stone into other major components, sub-domains even, of the site.
The main inspiration was Ylvis.com. From there I added a couple conventional elements like the feature boxes (with plain URLs instead of titles in my case) and the 4 widgets. I imagine the large picture to just be static, but responsive, like the rest of the site. No need for any fancy slider stuff. just the one “heads up!” picture should suffice. Another inspiration for that was this Unity3D page.
The one fairly unique feature is supposed to be the top-most menu (not counting the BP bar). What I need is an icon-based menu:

I am by no means sworn to this design. Any theme with a similar focus on data delivery and simplicity would of great interest to me.

November 12, 2011 at 12:03 am #603I iterated on the concept a bit, thinking how it’d work as a responsive design.

November 15, 2011 at 7:10 am #652Thanks. I’ve started digging into Infinity and I’m really enjoying it so far, although I’m by no stretch an advanced user, let alone a designer/developer of any sort.
I recently found a theme that looks and acts very similarly to the one I’ve described here:

That’s pretty much it down to the dot, but without the icon-based menu and the news items.
